Abstract
The Ahl al-Hadith school that emerged in nineteenth-century India represents an intellectual trend that sought to reorient the religious understanding of Muslims in the region directly toward the guidance of the Qurʾan and the Sunnah. The school developed an approach that idealized a return to what it regarded as the authentic religious understanding of early Islam and, within this framework, aimed at purifying the religious tradition. Considering practices and beliefs that had become widespread among the populace to be incompatible with the doctrine of tawḥīd, the school explicitly classified bidʿa (unwarranted innovations) and superstitions as forms of shirk. Likewise, on the grounds that it institutionalized taqlīd, adherence to any particular school of Islamic jurisprudence was rejected, and the derivation of legal rulings on the basis of the apparent (ẓāhir) meaning of the hadiths was adopted as a fundamental principle. Consequently, the school also displayed a limited or generally negative attitude toward rational methods of interpretation such as ijmāʿ and qiyās. This article examines the Ahl al-Hadith movement in India from both historical and intellectual perspectives. It first outlines the general landscape of religious movements in India and then analyzes the roles played by leading figures such as Naẓīr Ḥusayn al-Dihlawī (d. 1902), Ṣiddīq Ḥasan Khān (d. 1890), and Thanāʾ Allāh Amritsarī (d. 1948) in the formation and institutionalization of the movement. By analyzing the core teachings of the Ahl al-Hadith on issues such as tawḥīd, shirk, the Sunnah–hadith relationship, raʾy, ijmāʿ, qiyās, ijtihād, taqlīd, and Sufism, the study also addresses the movement’s influence in later periods in countries such as Pakistan, Kashmir, Bangladesh, and the United Kingdom. The study demonstrates that the Ahl al-Hadith movement constitutes a structure shaped by dynamics specific to the Indian subcontinent and by its connections with Salafi movements. Designed as a qualitative study based on the existing literature, this research aims to contribute to scholarship on Islamic schools of thought in the Indian subcontinent.
Özet
XIX. yüzyıl Hindistan’ında teşekkül eden Ehl-i Hadis Ekolü, bölge Müslümanlarının dinî anlayışını doğrudan Kur’an ve Sünnet’in rehberliğine dönüştürme iddiasıyla ortaya çıkan bir çizgiyi temsil etmektedir.
