Abstract

This study investigated the effects of fungal species and incubation duration on the physical and mechanical properties of mycelium-based packaging materials produced from poplar wood particles. Ganoderma lucidum (GL) and Pleurotus ostreatus (PO) fungal species were used and samples were incubated for 10, 20, and 30 days. The materials were evaluated for density, water absorption, thickness swelling, bending strength, modulus of elasticity, and compression strength. The results showed that water absorption behavior varied significantly depending on fungal species and incubation duration, with statistically significant differences observed at all immersion times (2, 24, and 48 h). While the lowest water absorption was obtained in the GL-20 group, the highest values were recorded in the GL-30 and PO-10 groups. Thickness swelling results indicated that GL-based samples exhibited lower dimensional changes, whereas PO-based samples exhibited greater swelling. Although certain trends were observed in terms of mechanical properties, the differences among groups were not statistically significant. Overall, an incubation duration of approximately 20 days provided a more balanced structural performance. Longer incubation periods led to increased biological degradation, resulting in higher porosity and reduced material performance. The findings demonstrate that mycelium-based composites are highly sensitive to processing parameters, and optimizing fungal species and incubation duration is critical for developing stable and functional bio-based packaging materials.
