Abstract

Global population growth and economic expansion have increased the demand for buildings and building materials. At the same time, thermal insulation for energy efficiency in buildings is becoming increasingly important. Therefore, in this study, insulation boards were produced from pine cones and sunflower stalks with densities of 0.4–0.5–0.6 g/cm³, thicknesses of 30–40–50 mm, and dimensions of 550 × 1100 mm. Density, moisture content, and swelling-water absorption rate were determined for the produced sample boards. All measurements and tests were carried out in accordance with relevant standards. The highest air-dry density was determined to be 0.777 g/cm³ for 50 mm thick boards with a density of 0.6 g/cm³ containing 6% sunflower stalk mixed with pine cones. The lowest moisture content (12.22%) was found in pine cones with a density of 0.4 g/cm³ and a thickness of 40 mm. The highest swelling rate (24.72%) was measured in pine cones (density: g/ 0.6 cm³, thickness: 40 mm) with added sunflower stalks after soaking in water for 72 hours. The lowest water absorption rate (38.63%) was determined in 100% pine cones (density: 0.5 g/cm³, thickness: 50 mm) after soaking in water for 2 hours. The swelling in thickness is below the 14% value specified in the standards.
