Abstract

This study calculated the potential plastic input of the ORKOD system, used for traceability of the production process in forestry activities, into forest ecosystems and analyzed its possible environmental impacts within a literature-based evaluation framework. The study area was selected as the Demirci Forest Management Directorate under the Izmir Forest Regional Directorate; the use of 40,000 ORKOD units projected in the 2026 production program was used as the basis. As a result of precision balance measurements, the average weight of a unit of ORKOD material remaining on the buttstock was determined to be 2.42 g. Accordingly, the total annual plastic input for the study area was calculated to be 96.8 kg. Considering the 143,187-hectare area of responsibility of the management directorate, the average annual plastic load was determined to be approximately 0.68 g/ha. If usage continues, it is projected that the cumulative plastic input from production could reach a minimum level of 2.04 g/ha over a three-year period. Although no direct microplastic analysis was conducted in the field, it was considered, in light of the existing scientific literature, that plastic materials may gradually transform into microplastics through physical fragmentation and environmental interactions over time, potentially posing risks to soil structure, microbial activity, and ecosystem processes. The findings indicate that while the functional contributions of the ORKOD system should be preserved, the long-term environmental impacts of plastic-based components need to be re-evaluated in line with sustainable forestry principles.
