Abstract
Karakhanid Turkic represents the final stage of the Old Turkic period and the beginning of the Middle Turkic period. The cultural interactions experienced during this era introduced new vocabulary, suffixes, and various grammatical features to the Turkic language. Notably, as a result of the cultural exchange with Arabic and Persian, the Persian-origin particle meğer was integrated into the Turkic lexicon. While its primary meanings in the Karakhanid period were "only," "except," and "but," over time it acquired new meanings such as "because," "as if," and "when." Although the particle meğer maintained its polysemous nature across historical Turkic dialects from Karakhanid to Ottoman Turkic, its semantic scope in Modern Turkish has regressed primarily to "whereas/apparently," losing its former meanings. As a modality marker, the particle meğer imbues a sentence with multiple meanings. Modality is defined as the overarching stance a speaker adopts toward a proposition, reflecting their personal interpretation and perspective. Associated with epistemic, evidential, deontic, and dynamic modalities, the particle meğer contributes modal nuances such as estimation, inference, and necessity to the sentence, depending on the context in which it is used. When translating polysemous words and modality-marking expressions, establishing equivalence is crucial to prevent semantic loss. Equivalence involves accurately transferring a word to the target language using its closest corresponding meaning while avoiding semantic degradation. To address the circumstances that lead to translation errors, this study examines literary works from the historical periods of the Turkic language. By extracting textual examples featuring the particle meğer, this paper systematically presents all the modal expressions this particle contributes to a sentence.
