Abstract

This study examines how social media platforms shape intra-family communication and media interaction. The analysis begins with the erosion of the principle of depth in journalism and explores how the spread of content via TikTok has influenced family dynamics. Content analyses of five crisis-oriented case studies—namely the George Floyd protests, the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine-Russia war, women’s rights protests in Iran, and the earthquake in Turkey—demonstrate that TikTok is a powerful medium for highlighting individual testimonies. However, due to contextual deficiencies, misinformation, and a lack of verification mechanisms, the platform also contributes to the superficiality of media consumption and the decline of information quality. This situation creates a critical rupture in media engagement among vulnerable groups, especially children and adolescents, and limits parents’ ability to monitor and guide their children's exposure to content. Within this framework, the study's conceptual foundation is structured at the intersection of the principle of depth in journalism, crisis journalism, digital media ecology, media literacy, and digital parenting. The main objective of the study is to reveal how TikTok’s rapid flow affects intra-family communication, within the framework of information security and media literacy. Findings indicate that the rise of superficial digital content exacerbates knowledge-based conflicts among family members, creates uncertainty about parenting roles, and deepens the intergenerational digital divide. In this context, the study offers an original contribution to the literature by emphasizing the need to redefine ethical, pedagogical, and cognitive boundaries in the integration of digital platforms into family life.
