Abstract
In this study, which aims to develop a reliable and valid scale to determine the environmental ethics approaches of secondary school students, the survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used. The draft scale, consisting of 67 items prepared based on a literature review, was presented to 11 experts for content validity. After the expert reviews, 28 items were removed from the scale. Following the necessary permissions from the relevant institutions, the data collection process was completed in the first semester of the 2023-2024 academic year with the voluntary participation of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students from the central districts of Van province (İpekyolu, Edremit, and Tuşba). The 39-item scale, designed as a 5-point Likert scale, was first subjected to Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) with the participation of 1282 students from three schools for construct validity, and then to Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with the participation of 391 students from three different schools. The results obtained from EFA indicated that the scale has a unidimensional structure. Ten items with factor loadings of .30 or lower were removed from the analysis. Additionally, five items were eliminated because their item-total correlations were below .30. A total of 15 items were removed from the scale as a result of EFA. The single-factor structure was found to explain 41.30% of the total variance and consisted of 24 items, with factor loadings ranging between .40 and .72. The Cronbach's Alpha reliability coefficient of the scale was found to be .93. The results of the CFA analysis conducted to confirm the scale model showed that the fit indices were at an acceptable level. As a result, a valid and reliable 24-item single-factor Environmental Ethics Approaches Scale was obtained.
