Abstract
The objective of this research is to identify the definitions of urban forests globally (within selected countries) and in Turkey, while underscoring the significance of the nexus between urban forests and ecosystem services for environmental sustainability. The study employs the document analysis method. In a narrow sense, the term urban forest generally refers solely to forested areas or tree-dominated vegetation; however, in a broader sense, it transcends traditional forest definitions and is characterized as a system encompassing all trees and associated green spaces within the urban landscape. Conversely, in Turkey, urban forests are defined within the framework of socio-cultural functions, touristic characteristics, and the pedagogical activities required for the education of children and youth. Urban forests represent a fundamental component not only for nature conservation but also for bolstering the climatic and social resilience of cities. They hold substantial importance regarding the benefits provided to humanity, namely ecosystem services. Consequently, the protection and enhancement of urban forests constitutes a priority strategy for sustainable cities. Through their environmental, ecological, and social benefits, urban forests offer effective nature-based solutions against climate change. To preserve and improve urban ecosystem services, urban forests must be managed sustainably through a systematic, holistic, and long-term planning perspective. In this regard, the 3-30-300 rule is particularly noteworthy. In summary, it can be asserted that urban forests contribute to sustainable environmental management through the ecosystem services they provide. In this context, it is imperative not only to increase the quantity of urban forests globally and in Turkey but also to facilitate interdisciplinary pedagogical and academic activities within these spaces.
