Abstract

Earthquakes are devastating natural disasters that not only cause physical destruction but also precipitate long-term social, psychological, and economic crises in the lives of individuals. Following the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes that occurred in Turkey on February 6, 2023, and affected a vast geographical area, a massive wave of internal migration took place driven by security concerns and the unsustainability of living conditions. In this context, women have experienced the traumatic impacts of the disaster and subsequent migration in a more profound and multi-layered manner, exacerbated by existing gender inequalities and caregiving obligations. This study aims to examine the psychosocial experiences, changes in family dynamics, and future expectations of women compelled to migrate to different cities following the earthquake, through a gender perspective. Employing a phenomenological design within the qualitative research framework, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 9 female participants aged 23 to 54, selected via snowball sampling. The obtained data were analyzed using the Gemini 2.5 artificial intelligence tool. Consequently, three main themes—"The Impact of the Earthquake on Women's Family Life," "The Impact of the Earthquake on Women's Social Life," and "The Impact of the Earthquake on Women's Mental Health"—along with six sub-categories were identified. The findings indicate that women's domestic care burdens and responsibilities increased significantly in the post-earthquake period; furthermore, women severed from their social networks experienced loneliness, rootlessness, and belonging issues in their new living environments. Regarding mental health, it was highlighted that while participants experienced intense anxiety, grief, and insecurity, migration provided a sense of relief for some women by distancing them from the traumatic setting. Regarding future expectations, a dual structure was observed: some participants had completely lost hope, while others maintained the motivation to hold on to life. In conclusion, the study underscores the necessity of holistic and gender-sensitive social work interventions to enhance the psychological resilience of displaced women, meet their basic needs, and facilitate their social integration.
