Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationships among middle school students’ ability to perceive time and chronology, historical empathy, and good citizenship tendencies within a partial mediation model. The study was designed as a cross-sectional correlational survey. The study group consisted of 384 students attending three public middle schools in the city center of Kütahya, Türkiye. Data were collected using the Time and Chronology Perception Skill Scale, the Historical Empathy Scale, and the Middle School Good Citizenship Cognitive and Affective Scales. Item-level confirmatory factor analyses were estimated with WLSMV by considering the ordinal structure of the items, whereas the main structural model was estimated with robust MLR using subscale scores. The partial mediation model showed good fit: χ²(21) = 27.426, p = .157, CFI = .994, TLI = .989, RMSEA = .028, SRMR = .022. The findings indicated that the general time-chronology factor positively predicted both dimensions of historical empathy and both dimensions of good citizenship. Bootstrap results showed that total indirect effects were significant for both cognitive and affective good citizenship, with affective historical empathy emerging as the most consistent single mediation channel. Outlier sensitivity analysis, the controlled model, multicollinearity diagnostics, common method bias checks, and the item-level full latent SEM diagnostic model generally supported the main pattern. However, some single historical empathy paths were sensitive to measurement and control specifications. Therefore, the findings should be interpreted as theoretically meaningful relational patterns rather than causal evidence.
