Abstract

With the rise of digitalization, not only have artistic forms undergone transformation, but the meanings attributed to art have also shifted. The modes of art production and consumption have changed, giving rise to new avenues of expression and discursive strategies. This transformation is particularly evident in the visual and conceptual framework of feminist art. By foregrounding themes, materials, tools, and compositional choices that challenge traditional aesthetic norms and visual codes, feminist art has developed an alternative visual and aesthetic language, adopting a critical stance toward systems of representation. This study examines the transformation of feminist art in the digital age through a visual and theoretical analysis of multimedia artist Arvida Byström’s photographic practice. While feminist art is historically rooted in the second-wave feminism of the 1970s, it has evolved into a dynamic and intersectional discourse that interrogates patriarchal systems of representation, aesthetic conventions, and the politics of visibility. In this context, Byström’s work—situated at the intersection of digital aesthetics, body politics, and feminist theory—offers a compelling example of how contemporary feminist artists utilize digital platforms to challenge normative visual regimes. The significance of this research lies in its interdisciplinary approach, which bridges feminist art history, visual communication, and digital media studies. Byström’s hyper-feminine aesthetic, provocative compositions, and strategic use of social media platforms such as Instagram illustrate how feminist art has moved beyond traditional mediums to become more participatory and accessible, generating new forms of visual resistance through digital networks. Methodologically, the study employs Gillian Rose’s visual content analysis model, which evaluates images across three dimensions: the site of production, the image itself, and audience response. Selected photographs were analyzed in relation to key feminist themes such as body positivity, menstrual visibility, gender performativity, and the deconstruction of beauty norms. Theoretical insights from scholars such as Donna Haraway, Laura Mulvey, Amelia Jones, and Kimberlé Crenshaw provided a conceptual foundation for the analysis. The findings reveal that Byström’s visual language is deliberately unsettling, employing exaggerated femininity, grotesque imagery, and taboo subjects to disrupt dominant aesthetic paradigms. Her strategic use of digital tools redefines the female body as a site of resistance, subjectivity, and multiplicity.
