Abstract
This study aims to reveal how a traditional production technique is reinterpreted within the context of contemporary artistic expression by examining the evolving role of the potter's wheel shaping method in contemporary ceramic art, using the example of Japanese ceramic artist Tomoya Sakai. While numerous studies exist in the literature regarding the historical and technical aspects of the potter's wheel, studies addressing its conceptual use in contemporary ceramic art through specific artist practices are limited. This research adopts a qualitative research method; theoretical data obtained through a literature review are evaluated in conjunction with the artist's biographical information and visual and content analyses of selected works and series. The scope of the study includes the historical development of the potter's wheel, its types of use, its place in contemporary ceramic art, and Tomoya Sakai's artistic productions. The analysis reveals that the artist does not merely use the potter's wheel as a technical tool for functional form production; rather, he transforms it into an artistic field of expression that makes visible concepts such as individuality, memory, identity, repetition, process, and temporality. In Sakai's works, the rhythm, layering, and deformation effects created by the movement of the potter's wheel stand out as both a formal and conceptual language of expression. Thus, the potter's wheel transcends the boundaries of traditional ceramic production practice, becoming an experimental tool that offers unique expressive possibilities within contemporary art. This study aims to contribute to the relevant literature and offer new perspectives on contemporary ceramic practices by evaluating the transformation of the potter's wheel in contemporary ceramic art within a conceptual framework.
