Abstract

Aim: This study presents a comparative analysis of the pronatalist policies in Turkey -characterized by the ‘at least three children’ discourse- and China’s ‘one-child’ policy. Treating reproduction as a political issue situated at the intersection of historical and ideological contexts, the research positions documentary cinema as a strategic tool for exposing power relations. Method: The documentaries One Child Nation (2019) and Bekleyiş (2021) were scrutinized using sociological film analysis. By decoding the relationship between visual narratives and social structures, the study reveals how political discourses reverberate in daily life and how fertility is institutionally regulated. Results: The findings demonstrate that mothers deviating from established norms are marginalized, regardless of the geographical or political regime. Contrasting practices -such as restricting abortion access versus enforcing birth control- are identified as shared ideological mechanisms shaping women’s reproductive rights. Conclusion: The decision to bear children is less an individual choice than a political stance shaped by power structures. Motherhood is posited as a culturally constructed and socially monitored performance. A feminist biopolitical perspective exposes the underlying power dynamics, questioning structures that suppress women's potential for liberation. Originality: Unlike traditional approaches that interpret population policies solely through demographic data, this study examines the embodied effects of these policies via cinematic representation. By synthesizing Foucault’s biopower with Butler and Berlant’s theories of performativity and affect, it offers an original model demonstrating that control over the female body is constructed not only through laws but also through emotions and social expectations.
