Abstract
During periods of high inflation, significant value increases reflected in valuation reports in Turkish Lira are often eliminated from financial statements after currency translation by entities whose functional currency is a foreign currency. This situation undermines the relevance of financial information. This study examines the interaction between TAS 40 and TAS 21 in an enterprise that has the Euro as its functional currency and measures its investment properties using the fair value model, under Turkey's high inflation conditions. Using a qualitative case analysis, the findings are interpreted within the frameworks of decision usefulness, positive accounting theory, agency cost approach, and fair value theories. The value increases reflected in the TL-denominated valuation reports for 2022 and 2024 were 313% and 312%, respectively, whereas these figures stood at only 79% and 91% in the financial statements converted to Euros; consequently, the findings indicate that the relevance characteristic of financial information has weakened. The findings are discussed in light of the Public Oversight, Accounting and Auditing Standards Authority's decision dated April 3, 2026, and the regulation titled "Translation into a Hyperinflationary Presentation Currency" published in the Official Gazette on April 14, 2026. While the generalizability of the results is limited due to the single-case design, the study provides theoretical insights for entities in similar circumstances and offers recommendations for regulatory authorities.
