Abstract

Revenue earned by companies is used as a major financial indicator and analysis tool and is considered by regulatory bodies as a decision criterion regarding company size. For instance, revenue is one of the three criteria for determining whether a company is subject to an independent audit. However, regulatory bodies may define revenue in different ways. This study examined the revenue amount of an export intermediary company subject to independent audit by meeting the conditions under Article 398 of the Turkish Commercial Code No. 6102. The Public Oversight Board determines the independent audit obligation of the companies by using the financial statements prepared under the tax legislation law. However, independently audited financial statements are prepared under Turkish Accounting Standards/Turkish Financial Reporting Standards. When the company's operations were evaluated within the scope of Turkish Financial Reporting Standard 15 Revenue from Customer Contracts, it was stated that the company is in the position of agent. Therefore, the revenue arising from intermediary activities should not be reported as revenue. As a result of this difference, it has been concluded that this company, which is subject to an independent audit due to the data in its financial statements prepared under the tax legislation law, would not be subject to an independent audit if its financial statements, which were independently audited and prepared under Turkish Accounting Standards/Turkish Financial Reporting Standards, were taken into consideration. A suggestion has been proposed to resolve the inconsistency that arises because of the consideration of the principal-agent relationship in audited financial statements.
