Abstract

The widespread use of digital technologies in working life has led employees to remain constantly connected and has increasingly blurred the boundaries between work and private life. This situation makes it difficult for employees to psychologically detach from work and highlights the importance of digital detox practices, which refer to the conscious limitation of digital technology use. The aim of this study is to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool that can assess behaviors and practices related to limiting digital technology use within organizations. For this purpose, the Organizational Digital Detox Scale was developed and its psychometric properties were examined. Research data were collected from employees, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to examine the construct validity of the scale. The results of the exploratory factor analysis indicated that the scale consists of three dimensions—organizational support, self-control, and personal boundaries—and a total of 12 items. The total variance explained by the scale was found to be 51.765%. Confirmatory factor analysis results demonstrated that the three-factor structure showed an acceptable model fit (χ²/df=2.251; RMSEA=0.056; CFI=0.942; GFI=0.961). In addition, the overall reliability coefficient of the scale was found to be 0.743. These findings indicate that the developed scale is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring organizational digital detox behaviors. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on managing digital technology use in organizations and to provide a methodological basis for future research examining employees’ digital boundaries in the digitalized workplace.
