Abstract
Gagauz Turkish belongs to the South/Southwest branch based on the directional classification of the Turkic written languages. The Gagauz people, who are Orthodox Christians, reside primarily in Moldova, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, and Kazakhstan., the Moldovan Parliament adopted the Law on the Special Legal Status of Gagauzia on 23 December 1994, thereby recognizing the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia. Despite prolonged contact with various languages and cultures, the Gagauz people have managed to succeed in preserving their linguistic and cultural heritage. Gagauz Turkish is notable as the most recent Turkic language to have transitioned from an exclusively oral tradition to a written form. While the Gagauz Turkish and the Turkish spoken in Türkiye share a significant portion of their lexicon, notable differences exist as well. For instance, in Gagauz Turkish, patlıcan which denotes “eggplant” in Türkiye Turkish, refers to “tomato”, while çorbacı “soup vendor” means “landlord, host” in Gagauz Turkish and such cases exemplify the phenomenon of pseudo-equivalence. Pseudo-equivalence refers to a phenomenon in which a word in two languages, or in two dialects of the same language, shares the same etymological origin, spelling, and pronunciation but differs in meaning. This study investigated instances of pseudo-equivalence in the lexicon of Gagauz Turkish and the variety of Turkish spoken in Turkey.
