Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the alphabet and word spelling knowledge of the teacher candidates studying in the Department of Turkish Language Education. The study was conducted as a document review and for this purpose, it was investigated whether the alphabet and spelling knowledge of a total of 81 1st and 2nd grades students studying at the Turkish Education Department of a university in the Marmara region in Turkey differed based on certain variables. Of the students participating in the study, 70 were Turkish, 11 were foreign nationals, and 64 (79%) were in the 1st grade and 17 (21%) were in the 2nd grade. 22 (27.2%) of the participating students were male and 59 (72.8%) were female. The students studying at the Turkish language teaching department took language level courses on teaching Turkish as a mother language as well as teaching Turkish as a foreign language. In one of these courses, Turkish Grammar I, training was offered on writing the Turkish alphabet, how the sound changed in writing, writing syllables, and how to syllabify at the end of statement. At the end of this instruction, the students were asked to write the alphabet in order so that their alphabet knowledge could be analyzed. In order to quantify the students' spelling knowledge, eighteen words with different syllable structures were asked as exam questions and they were asked to syllabify each and every word as an answer. Based on the findings of the study, 62 students (76.5%) succeeded to write the alphabet correctly and 19 (23.5) wrote incorrectly; 4 students (4.9%) managed to syllabify the words correctly and 77 (95.1) incorrectly. Consequently, the alphabet and spelling knowledge of teacher candidates did not show any significant difference based on the variables of gender and grade level.
Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerden 70’i Türk, 11’i yabancı uyruklu olup 64’ü (%79) 1. sınıfta 17’si (%21) 2. sınıfta öğrenim görmektedir.
