Abstract

This study aims to re-examine the document analysis method, which is widely used in qualitative research, within the framework of contemporary conditions. The limited number of article-level studies addressing the document analysis method in Türkiye, together with the expansion of the scope of the concept of document in conjunction with digital technologies, has provided the grounds for the preparation of this research. The study first revisits the concepts of document and document analysis; subsequently, a nine-stage framework of the method is presented. These stages consist, respectively, of the formulation of the research question, document compilation and sampling, critical evaluation of documents, preliminary reading and classification, coding, theme and category development, interpretation and meaning-making, validity and reliability strategies, and reporting. The study also elucidates descriptive, in vivo, and evaluative coding types through concrete examples; and examines the applications of the method in the fields of education, law, health, history, politics, sociology, business, social work, as well as digital environments and big data. Finally, the contribution of artificial intelligence tools to document analysis is evaluated along the axes of natural language processing, text classification, topic modeling, sentiment analysis, and large language models; and it is argued that artificial intelligence-supported approaches cannot substitute for the traditional method, but rather should constitute a complementary layer that extends the researcher's interpretive capacity.
