Abstract
The historical importance of wood in furniture production can be attributed to its ability to meet both aesthetic and structural requirements. While solid wood was traditionally the dominant material, contemporary practices increasingly favor wood-based panels and alternative materials that visually resemble wood. This study examines the impact of this transformation on manufacturing techniques through a comparative evaluation of the types of wood used, processing methods, and their functional advantages. Specifically, the research investigates how the physical and mechanical properties of solid wood chairs produced in 1970 and 1990 have changed over time. Chairs manufactured from poplar in 1970 and beech in 1990 were compared in 2023 with newly obtained control samples of the same species. The test results revealed that prolonged use leads to significant deterioration in the physical and mechanical properties of wood. The strength losses in poplar chairs were approximately as follows: 69% in horizontal load bending resistance, 39% in vertical load bending resistance, 88% in the modulus of elasticity under horizontal load, and 36% in the modulus of elasticity under vertical load, while for beech wood chairs, the reductions were 47%, 3%, 14%, and 18%, respectively. These findings indicate that solid wood furniture components lose durability over time, and the degree of strength loss may vary depending on the location of the wood within the furniture structure. Factors such as reductions in air-dry and oven-dry density values, changes in water absorption rates, and the effects of thickness swelling and shrinkage can compromise the structural integrity of wood over time. Additionally, variations in mechanical parameters, such as the modulus of elasticity and bending strength, play a critical role in the overall durability of furniture.
