Abstract

The classification of galaxies is a critical step in understanding their formation and evolution. The images obtained by the imaging surveys have been tremendously increased over the past 20 years. Thus, it nearly became difficult to classify galaxies visually. Today, machine learning in parameter space and deep learning in pixel space help to partially overcome this challenge. In this study, convolutional neural networks (CNN) were used to classify galaxies. The model employed in the study was trained using images of both SDSS and DECaLS surveys which have been labelled from the Galaxy Zoo-2 project. The model we trained for six classes using DECaLS images revealed an accuracy of 87\% while the model trained using SDSS images of the same galaxies resulted an accuracy of 84\%.
