Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the economic impacts of recreation services at local, urban, national, and international levels within the framework of the concept of recreation economy, and to examine the economic contribution and sustainability dimension of these services from a multifaceted perspective. The study utilized a documentary research method from qualitative research methods, examining 23 studies and benefiting from 17 of them. Only one of the examined studies was national; the rest were international sources. Due to the very limited number of studies in this field and the fact that this is the first detailed study in the area, it is believed that the study will make significant contributions to the literature. Relevant studies have been reviewed, and the state of the recreation economy in the USA, Japan, South Korea, China, India, Brazil, Canada, Russia, European Union countries, and Turkey has been evaluated from a comparative perspective. The findings show that the sector not only provides economic contributions but also undertakes multifaceted functions such as job creation, increasing social welfare, and supporting sustainable development. In this context, a holistic approach that considers environmental sustainability, cultural diversity, and social benefit, in addition to economic performance, is important for ensuring the sustainable growth of the recreation economy. Future research could be encouraged to examine the long-term impacts of post-pandemic transformations, the multiplier effects of sports and recreation tourism on the local economy, and the contributions of natural resource management strategies to sector performance.
