Abstract
The primary purpose of this research is to determine the Machiavellianism and narcissism levels of actively serving sports coaches and to examine whether these subclinical personality traits differ in terms of various demographic and professional variables. Utilizing the relational survey model, one of the quantitative research approaches, the sample of the study consists of a total of 320 active coaches, 101 female and 219 male, operating across Turkey who participated in the study on a voluntary basis. A Personal Information Form, the Machiavellianism Scale, and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI-16) were used as data collection tools. The obtained data were analyzed using independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlation techniques. According to the analysis results, it was determined that as the age and professional experience of the coaches increase, their Machiavellian tendencies and narcissistic impulses decrease significantly, whereas younger and less experienced coaches exhibit higher levels of status desire and entitlement. It was found that the gender factor does not create a significant difference in scale scores; on the other hand, being single and consuming alcohol significantly increase both Machiavellian strategies and narcissistic sub-dimensions. In terms of sports branch, it was concluded that team sports coaches may be more prone to stretching moral norms (moral disengagement) on the way to achieving goals compared to individual sports coaches. In line with the findings, suggestions for institutional education policies have been presented.
