Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the mental toughness levels of individuals engaged in diving according to various variables. The research was conducted using the descriptive survey model, one of the quantitative research methods. The study group consisted of a total of 140 individuals participating in diving activities across Türkiye. Data were collected through the Sports Mental Toughness Questionnaire (SMTQ) and a personal information form, and independent samples t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used in the analyses. The findings of the study indicated that the participants’ mental toughness levels were generally at moderate to high levels. According to the gender variable, male participants had significantly higher confidence, control, and total mental toughness scores compared to female participants, while no significant difference was found in the constancy sub-dimension. It was determined that the age variable had no significant effect on mental toughness. In terms of diving experience, a significant difference was found only in the confidence sub-dimension, and it was observed that confidence levels increased as the number of dives increased. Analyses conducted according to diving type revealed that individuals engaged in recreational diving had lower mental toughness scores compared to those involved in sportive and professional diving. As a result, it was concluded that mental toughness is particularly associated with sport-specific variables such as diving type and experience, whereas age is not a determining factor. It is considered that sports experience plays an important role in the development of mental toughness.
