Abstract

Participation in sport-based recreational activities during adolescence plays an important role in promoting physical health, psychological well-being, and positive lifestyle habits. Leisure time attitudes, reflecting individuals’ cognitive, affective, and behavioral tendencies toward leisure activities, may represent a key psychological factor influencing recreational exercise motivation. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between recreational exercise motivation and leisure time attitudes among young individuals aged 14-17 who participated in sport-based recreational activities. The sample consisted of 378 participants involved in sport-based recreational activities, including 140 females and 238 males between the ages of 14 and 17. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Recreational Exercise Motivation Measure (REMM), and the Leisure Attitude Scale. Independent samples t-tests were conducted to determine whether recreational exercise motivation and leisure time attitudes differed according to demographic variables such as gender and type of sport participation. In addition, correlation and regression analyses were performed to examine the relationships between recreational exercise motivation and leisure time attitudes. The findings indicated that recreational exercise motivation and leisure time attitude scores did not differ significantly according to gender. However, correlation analysis revealed a moderate positive relationship between recreational exercise motivation and leisure time attitudes and their sub-dimensions. Regression analysis further demonstrated that leisure time attitudes significantly predicted recreational exercise motivation, explaining a meaningful proportion of variance in motivation levels among young participants. Overall, the results suggest that positive attitudes toward leisure activities may enhance adolescents’ motivation to participate in recreational exercise. Promoting positive leisure attitudes and providing supportive recreational environments may help increase adolescents’ participation in sport-based recreational activities. These findings contribute to the literature by providing empirical evidence on the relationship between leisure time attitudes and recreational exercise motivation in adolescents.
