Abstract

Disasters, by their very nature, materialise abruptly and without warning over a given period. The escalating values of population density, transportation problems and shelter needs in urban areas play a pivotal role in the occurrence of secondary disasters.People exposed to disasters require areas where they will feel secure in the aftermath of the disaster. These areas must be delineated according to specific criteria and the public must be informed of their location. The objective of this study was to assess the compliance of assembly areas with the established criteria, the adequacy of these areas, the contents of the areas, the level of public awareness regarding these areas, and the adequacy of the areas. The subject of this research is to ascertain the level of knowledge of individuals residing in Gümüşhane province regarding assembly areas in the event of a seismic disaster and the adequacy of these areas. A total of 65 participants were surveyed in the pre-test phase, and 436 participants were surveyed in the main application phase. The collected data were analysed using SPSS 25.0 software. The reliability analysis of the questionnaire form revealed a Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.854. The analysis revealed significant variations in demographic characteristics, including marital status, gender, age, occupational category, and educational attainment, among the survey respondents. The primary objective of this study was to establish a foundation for future research, specifically focusing on the evaluation of emergency assembly and temporary shelter areas.
