Abstract

This study provides a descriptive analysis of nationality-based tourist profiles and their economic implications for Turkey, within the broader context of post-COVID-19 global tourism trends and the need for market diversification. Drawing on UN Tourism Data Dashboard and related international reports, the paper examines Turkey’s international tourism receipts and receipts per arrival indicators over the period 2016–2024. The findings confirm that tourism has become a strategic driver of GDP growth, employment, and regional development in Turkey, yet this expansion has largely relied on a limited set of source markets with relatively low spending patterns. The stagnation of receipts per arrival in the range of 700–750 USD between 2016 and 2019 indicates that qualitative upgrading has lagged behind quantitative growth. Following the pandemic shock, the relative increase in higher-budget segments and the rise of receipts per arrival to 929 USD in 2024 suggest an improving capacity to attract high-spending tourist markets, although Turkey still remains slightly below the global average. The volatility of tourism revenues and growth rates over 2016–2024 is closely associated with nationality composition, geopolitical risks, and exposure to global shocks. The results imply that, instead of focusing solely on increasing the number of arrivals, Turkey should target a tourist profile characterized by high spending, longer stays, and diversified national origins, supported by market diversification strategies, sustainable tourism practices, and technological upgrading. The study offers a descriptive, literature-based framework that can serve as a starting point for future research employing nationality-level micro data and econometric modelling.
