Abstract

With the increasing number of high-rise buildings in Türkiye, the architectural façade design of these structures has become an important field of research, encompassing both aesthetics and performance. This study aims to evaluate the transformation of architectural façade design in high-rise buildings in Türkiye within the context of sustainability goals and the impact of Building Information Modeling (BIM) on architectural decision-making processes. A qualitative research approach was adopted in the study, and the data were examined using a literature review and content analysis. Within the scope of the study, to clarify the current situation in Türkiye, projects incorporating BIM-based façade applications, such as the Istanbul Financial Center Ziraat Towers, as well as academic publications, were analyzed. Particularly after the 2000s, rapid urbanization, the influence of global architectural trends, and advancing technologies have led to a significant transformation in the façades of high-rise buildings. This evolution, ranging from traditional glass–aluminum façades to multi-layered envelope systems prioritizing energy efficiency, reflects the change in architectural design culture in Türkiye. However, studies that holistically evaluate the technological, environmental, and design factors behind this transformation remain limited. In this context, Building Information Modeling (BIM) emerges as an important tool supporting sustainable façade design in high-rise buildings. BIM-based design processes enable the integration of criteria directly affecting façade performance, such as daylight control, thermal performance analysis, material optimization, and life cycle assessment, into the early stages of design. Thus, architects can shape decisions on façade form, material selection, and structural organization within a more data-driven, sustainable framework. It has been identified that current BIM practices in Türkiye remain predominantly focused on technical coordination, clash detection, and construction processes. At the same time, their use as a sustainability-oriented decision-support tool in the early design stages remains limited. As a result, the study highlights that BIM should be positioned in Türkiye not merely as a modeling tool, but as a strategic platform for developing environmentally responsive façade designs in high-rise buildings.
