Abstract

Cold Ironing is a shore-side electrification system that allows ships at berth to meet their energy demands from land-based electricity without operating onboard generators. This application reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions in port areas, thereby improving air quality and lowering the carbon footprint. In this context, the aim of this study is to conduct a bibliometric analysis, using visual mapping techniques, of scientific studies on Cold Ironing technology, which has gained critical importance in achieving emission reduction and sustainability targets in the maritime sector. Within the scope of the study, the Web of Science (WoS) database was examined, and 273 studies published between 2000 and July 2026 were analyzed using the VOSviewer software. The analysis identified prominent publications, countries, authors, and journals, and included co-word, citation, co-authorship, and bibliographic coupling analyses. The findings indicate that the number of publications on Cold Ironing technology has increased significantly, particularly since 2020–2021, and that the studies have mainly focused on “emission reduction”, “energy management systems”, and “green energy”. The bibliometric maps provide a comprehensive overview of the main actors, research themes, and scientific relationship networks in the field, thereby offering a literature roadmap for future studies.
