Abstract

The increasing prevalence of digitalization in today’s higher education has made online learning environments one of the key components of academic settings. In these environments, students’ ability to access information and share what they have learned with other students is considered crucial for fostering peer interaction and collaborative learning. However, students’ tendencies to seek and share information can vary from person to person. Although studies examining the relationship between personality traits and information sharing exist in the literature, the predictive role of personality traits on the information-sharing behaviors of sports science students has remained quite limited. In this context, the study aimed to examine the extent to which the Big Five personality traits predict knowledge receiving and knowledge giving behaviors of sports science students in online learning environments. Conducted using a correlational survey model, the study included sports science students enrolled in undergraduate programs at the sports science faculties of three state universities. In the sampling process, convenience sampling was utilized, taking into account ease of implementation and the practicality of the data collection process. The study utilized the “Personal Information Form,” the “Knowledge Sharing Behavior in Online Learning Environments Scale,” and the “Big Five-50 Personality Test.” Pearson correlation analysis was used to examine the relationships between variables, while linear regression analysis was used to determine predictive factors. The results of the correlation analysis revealed significant positive relationships between knowledge receiving and agreeableness (r = .323; p < .001), conscientiousness (r = .301; p < .001), and openness to experience (r = .354; p < .001). Significant positive correlations were found between knowledge giving and extraversion (r = .250; p < .001), agreeableness (r = .226; p < .001), conscientiousness (r = .127; p = .034), and openness to experience (r = .181; p = .002). Regression analysis revealed that the knowledge receiving model was significant (R²adj = .165; F = 12.055; p < .001), with agreeableness (β = .180; p = .010) and openness to experience (β = .237; p = .001) were positive, while emotional stability (β = −.115; p = .049) was a significant negative predictor. It was also determined that the knowledge giving model was significant (R²adj = .075; F = 5.536; p < .001) and that only extraversion (β = .219; p = .001) significantly predicted information sharing in a positive direction. In conclusion, the results indicate that personality traits play a significant role in explaining information-sharing behaviors among sports science students in online learning environments. Openness to experience and agreeableness were found to be positive predictors of knowledge receiving behavior, while emotional stability was identified as a negative predictor. Extraversion, however, is the sole significant predictor of knowledge giving behavior. These findings indicate that the relationships between personality traits and information sharing vary depending on the direction of the sharing. Therefore, various participation options that facilitate information seeking, asking questions, peer interaction, and voluntary information contribution should be offered in online learning environments. However, the limited amount of variance explained suggests that social, motivational, and technological factors must also be taken into account.
