Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the cognitive, affective, and behavioral attitudes of high school students participating in recreational sports programs offered by local governments towards extracurricular sports activities, and to determine whether these attitudes differ according to selected sociodemographic variables. A total of 492 high school students (236 female, 256 male) who voluntarily participated in recreational sports activities offered by the local government in Konya during the 2022–2023 academic year were included in the cross-sectional survey study. Data were collected using a personal information form and the Student Attitudes Towards Extracurricular Sports Activities Scale, consisting of 18 items and three sub-dimensions: cognitive, affective, and behavioral. Cronbach's alpha coefficients for the current sample were calculated as .804 for the cognitive dimension, .906 for the affective dimension, and .784 for the behavioral dimension. Due to the non-normal distribution of the data, the Mann–Whitney U test was used for two-group comparisons and the Kruskal–Wallis H test was used for comparisons of more than two groups. The cognitive, affective, and behavioral attitude scores of the students were determined as 28.44±5.24, 13.44±6.29, and 14.39±3.71, respectively. A significant difference was found only in affective attitude in favor of male students (Z = −2.880, p = .004). A significant difference was also found only in the affective dimension in terms of age (Z = −3.972, p < .001), and it was observed that the rank averages of students aged 16 and over were higher. While affective attitude differed significantly according to class level (χ²(3) = 15.716, p = .001), no significant differences were found in any sub-dimension according to weekly leisure time and mother and father's education level. Significant differences were found in cognitive (χ²(3) = 8.438, p = .038) and affective (χ²(3) = 8.256, p = .041) attitudes according to family income. The results show that sociodemographic differences in young people's attitudes towards recreational sports are concentrated especially in the affective component. It is recommended that local governments focus on creating positive, inclusive and socioeconomically equitable experiences in recreational sports programs for young people, as well as physical accessibility.
