Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop a valid and reliable measurement instrument for assessing athletes’ perceptions of fear of loneliness. The scale development process involved both qualitative and quantitative stages. The qualitative stage included focus group interviews, item development based on participants’ views, a literature review, and content validity analyses based on the Lawshe technique. In the quantitative stage, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), convergent and discriminant validity analyses, and composite reliability analyses were conducted following assumption testing. The EFA sample consisted of 620 athletes (M_age = 21.84 ± 4.67), while the CFA sample comprised 468 athletes (M_age = 22.17 ± 4.51). Analyses conducted on independent samples revealed that the 7-point Likert-type scale consisted of two dimensions: “Situational Loneliness” (α = .94; n = 8) and “Social Exclusion” (α = .93; n = 5). The overall Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was .95, and the total variance explained was 72.841%. CFA yielded the following fit indices: χ²/df = 3.93, RMSEA = .070, SRMR = .048, NFI = .97, NNFI = .97, CFI = .97, GFI = .92, and AGFI = .90. In addition, AVE, MSV, ASV, and CR values indicated adequate convergent and discriminant validity and composite reliability. In conclusion, the Fear of Loneliness Scale for Athletes can be considered a valid and reliable instrument for assessing fear of loneliness among athletes.
