Abstract

Football is a team sport that requires the integrated use of technical, tactical, physical, and psychological abilities, demanding a high level of coordination and performance. The systematic development of technical skills during the youth period plays a crucial role in shaping athletes' future performance. Football-specific movements largely depend on the coordinated function of the ankle, knee, and hip joints, with the ankle joint serving as one of the key components of the kinetic chain. Limitations in ankle joint mobility may impair movement efficiency and force transmission, consequently affecting technical skills such as sprinting, changing direction, passing, dribbling, and maintaining balance. Recent studies have suggested that ankle mobilization exercises may improve joint range of motion, enhance neuromuscular control, and contribute positively to sports performance. However, research investigating the effects of these exercises on the technical skill performance of young football players remains limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effects of ankle mobilization exercises on the technical skill performance of 13–14-year-old male youth football players. The study was conducted using a pre-test/post-test experimental design with a control group. A total of 20 male football players aged 13–14 years voluntarily participated in the study and were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 10) or a control group (n = 10). In addition to their regular football training, the experimental group performed ankle mobilization exercises three times per week for 10 weeks, whereas the control group continued only their regular football training. Technical skill performance was assessed using the Mor Christian Dribbling Test, Mor-Christian Passing Test, Mor-Christian Shooting Test, Yeagley Soccer Test, Slalom Dribbling Test, Loughborough Short Passing Test (LSPT), and the 20-meter Sprint Test. The collected data were analyzed using appropriate statistical methods. The findings revealed significant improvements in dribbling, passing, ball juggling, slalom dribbling, short passing, and 20-meter sprint performance in the experimental group. Although shooting performance improved after the intervention, the observed change was not statistically significant. While improvements were also observed in several performance variables in the control group, these improvements were less pronounced than those of the experimental group. In conclusion, ankle mobilization exercises may contribute positively to the development of technical skill performance in young football players. The improvements observed in dribbling, passing, short passing, and sprint performance suggest that ankle mobilization can be considered a supportive component of football training programs. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the planning of evidence-based training programs for youth football players and provide a reference for future research investigating the relationship between ankle mobility and technical performance.
