Abstract

Developments in internet technologies have also had a significant impact on the business world by increasing operational efficiency. However, these advancements have simultaneously brought about new organizational and institutional problems of the modern era, such as social media addiction and cyberloafing. In this context, the primary aim of the study is to evaluate, within the framework of the literature, the effects of increasing social media use and the resulting social media addiction on cyberloafing, as well as the implications of these multidimensional factors for employee performance in the digital age. For this purpose, a comprehensive literature review was conducted using the databases Google Scholar, Web of Science, ResearchGate, and DergiPark with keywords such as “social media addiction,” “cyberloafing,” “virtual loafing,” “employee performance,” and “job performance.” The common finding of the empirical studies examined is that cyberloafing is not merely a simple waste of time; rather, it negatively affects employees’ cognitive productivity and psychological well-being, while also varying according to factors such as education level, age, and position. In particular, employees working in positions with high job complexity were found to experience the negative effects of social media use and cyberloafing more intensely. Consequently, it was concluded that organizations aiming to manage the risks of the digital age should focus on modern management models that encourage self-regulation and self-control.
