Abstract
Studies aiming to examine the social, demographic, and economic structures of any settlement within the boundaries of the Ottoman Empire during the nineteenth century primarily rely on population registers and temettuat registers as fundamental sources. The Ottoman Empire conducted its first modern population census in 1831, recording the male population throughout the country. Following the promulgation of the Tanzimat Edict, a second population census was carried out in 1844 as part of broader efforts to reorganize the administrative and fiscal structure of the state. Concurrently, between 1844 and 1845, temettuat surveys were conducted, and tax-paying households were recorded in detail. The temettuat registers contain extensive information on individuals, including their names, nicknames, titles, occupations, movable and immovable properties, sources of income, and tax obligations. These records provide rich data that enable researchers to reconstruct the social, demographic, and economic characteristics of the settlements to which they belong. Drawing upon population and temettuat registers, this study examines the demographic structure, occupational distribution, economic activities, and socioeconomic characteristics of the Modanlı Tribe residing in the villages of Çeltikli, Katrancı, Saatli, Kara Süleymanlı, Yamak, and Kale, which were administratively affiliated with the district of Haymana in Ankara.
