Abstract

This study examines the record-breaking flight carried out in 1931 by American pilots Russell N. Boardman and John L. Polando, who completed the longest non-stop flight in the history of aviation at the time, traveling from New York to Istanbul. The completion of this flight in Istanbul holds symbolic significance in terms of the international visibility and perception of early Republican Türkiye. The study aims to evaluate this aviation achievement within the political and diplomatic context of the period. In this regard, the technical and organizational aspects of the flight, its impact on American public opinion, and the manner in which it was received in Türkiye are analyzed in detail. In addition, the possible effects of the flight on the modernization discourse, international image, and political visibility of the young Republic of Türkiye are examined. The study is based on document analysis and draws on archival materials from both the United States and Türkiye, contemporary periodicals, memoirs, and secondary literature. In this respect, the study adopts an interdisciplinary approach that goes beyond a purely technical narrative of aviation history by incorporating diplomatic and political perspectives.
