Abstract

This research aims to examine the role of parents in the development of reading culture in preschool children. The study investigates the relationship between parents' competence in fostering a reading culture and their level of participation in child-parent reading activities; it also analyzes how this relationship differs according to demographic variables such as parents' education level, income, number of siblings, and gender roles. The study assumes that reading culture is a social and cultural construct shaped within the family environment and aims to reveal how parental behaviors shape children's relationship with books. The research was conducted within the framework of a survey research design. The sample consisted of a group of 256 mothers of children attending independent kindergartens in the city center of Bolu. The data obtained were analyzed using Pearson Correlation Coefficient and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The research findings revealed a significant negative correlation between parents' ability to foster a reading culture and their level of participation in reading activities with their children. It was observed that some mothers with lower levels of education showed more frequent reading habits with their children, which may be related to the cultural context. Furthermore, it was determined that as the number of siblings increases, children's one-on-one reading experiences decrease; and in the context of gender roles, mothers assume a more dominant role in supporting children's reading habits.
