Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the criteria to be considered during the selection and simplification of epics -which hold a significant place among the texts used in Turkish education- for secondary school students and to verify the appropriateness of these criteria based on empirical data. A multi-phase design model, one of the mixed-method designs, was utilized in the study. Various interviews were conducted with experts in the fields of folk literature and Turkish education to reach a consensus on a criteria list for simplifying epic texts. The criteria list prepared as a result of these interviews was submitted for the review of 10 volunteer Turkish teachers, and the list was finalized based on their feedback. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this list, three epic texts were selected and simplified according to the established criteria. The simplified texts, along with their original versions, were administered to 400 students attending three different secondary schools in Ankara, selected based on varying socioeconomic levels, and reading comprehension tests were applied. The data collected from these tests were analyzed using the T-test, a parametric statistical method. As a result of the analyses, it was observed that epic texts simplified in accordance with the criteria list created a significant difference in students’ reading comprehension levels compared to the original epic texts.
