Abstract

The study aims to examine the language development and home early literacy environments of Roma children in the preschool period. The study group consists of 26 Roma children residing in a neighborhood in Düzce province and their parents. The research was carried out using a quantitative survey model. Turkish Early Language Development Test (TEDIL), Home Early Literacy Environment Scale (EVOK) and Personal Information Form created by the researcher were used to collect data. In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistics of the scores obtained from the TEDİL scale and frequency distributions according to risk status were used; descriptive statistics related to the average scores obtained from the EVOK scale and correlation analysis were used to evaluate the relationship between the TEDİL and EVOK scale sub-dimension scores. In conclusion, it was found that Roman children mostly scored at or below the average level in terms of language development, while the early literacy environment at home was generally below average.
