Abstract

This study aims to identify the potential developmental functions associated with traditional children’s games from the Bolu region and to evaluate their contemporary relevance. The dataset consists of a traditional children’s game repertoire compiled through folkloric fieldwork conducted between 2018 and 2025 and previously published as a collection. A total of 151 games were examined, and each game was assigned to one of four categories—social development, physical/psychomotor development, cognitive development, and language development—according to its dominant developmental function. Within a qualitative research framework, document analysis and descriptive content analysis techniques were employed. The findings indicate that 51.7% of the games were classified under social development, 33.8% under physical/psychomotor development, 7.9% under cognitive development, and 6.6% under language development. Games classified under social development display structural features associated with sharing, responsibility, cooperation, role-taking, and experiencing social rules; those in the physical/psychomotor category involve movement, balance, and coordination; cognitive games are associated with strategy formation, problem solving, attention, and reasoning; and language-oriented games contain features related to rhythm, repetition, rhymes, vocabulary, and phonological awareness. The findings suggest that traditional Bolu children’s games constitute a multifunctional repertoire with developmental, pedagogical, and cultural dimensions. However, these functions should not be interpreted as directly measured developmental outcomes; rather, they were evaluated through document analysis based on the structural features, rules, verbal content, and forms of play of the games.
