Abstract

In this study, urban folklore is examined within a polycentric framework in relation to urban transformation, subcultures, globalization, and digitalization. The aim of the study is to analyze, from a holistic perspective, the processes of production, transmission, and reproduction of folklore within the heterogeneous and dynamic structure of cities, beyond traditional village-centered approaches. This general framework is concretized particularly through Azerbaijan’s local urbanization practices. The research is based on a qualitative design; phenomenological and hermeneutic approaches have been adopted, and document analysis and literature review methods have been employed. Studies on urban folklore, digital folklore, and post-folklore theory, together with modern folklore examples, have been used as data sources. The findings indicate that urbanization, migration, and globalization have transformed the content, functions, and circulation of folklore. Urban folklore has acquired a hybrid and syncretic structure through the interaction of traditional elements and new urban narrative forms. In this context, memes, urban legends, and digital narratives have emerged as key forms of contemporary urban folklore. In this respect, urban folklore emerges as a dynamic and central analytical field for understanding contemporary cultural production within the post-folklore paradigm.
