Abstract

This study aims to descriptively examine middle school students’ information technology use and to evaluate the performance characteristics of student-produced educational videos based on a rubric. In the digital era, students increasingly interact with video-based content through mobile devices; however, their roles as content producers remain relatively underexplored. In this context, the study addresses students’ access to and patterns of information technology use together with the performance levels of the videos they produce within a holistic descriptive framework. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach and a descriptive survey design. Data were collected from 110 students enrolled in four different sixth-grade classes at a public middle school through the Information Technologies (IT) Usage Status Questionnaire. In addition, 32 educational videos produced by the students were evaluated using a rubric that included the dimensions of content structuring, technical structure, and multimedia organization. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and the agreement between the evaluations of two independent experts was determined using Cohen’s Kappa coefficient. The findings indicate that students have widespread access to information technologies and use video platforms for both academic and entertainment purposes. While video viewing experience is highly common, video production experience appears to be more limited. Rubric evaluation results reveal that student-produced videos generally demonstrate moderate to above-average performance levels (M = 19.80, SD = 4.69), and the level of inter-rater agreement is substantial (Kappa = 0.57–0.93). While relatively stronger performance is observed in the technical and multimedia dimensions, variations emerge in the planning and editing aspects. Overall, the findings suggest that production-based video tasks are feasible at the middle school level; however, the process needs to be supported with structured pedagogical guidance. Accordingly, it is recommended that video production processes be designed in a clear and structured manner, that students be guided in content planning and multimedia design, and that rubric-based feedback processes be integrated into instruction.
