Abstract

Performance and performative approaches offer an alternative to a scripted theatre approach by focusing on the performer's body. Performance gains originality because it contains societal, social and political influences that affect the performer's own artistic production and the conditions of production. This situation causes the boundaries between life and art in the performance to become unclear and its own unique structure to emerge with each repetition. Therefore, the definition, scope and content of the performance become ambiguous. In this study, in order to clarify certain issues, the content of the developing performance theory in the field of theatre is conveyed based on the views of academics Richard Schechner and Peggy Phelan. In Richard Schechner's performance approach, the common field of work of theatre with cultural events, the collaboration with anthropologist Victor Turner, performative action and behavior issues are touched upon. In Peggy Phelan's performance studies, the subjects of poststructuralism, postmodernism, psychoanalysis and feminist theory are discussed along with the originality of performances and the process of liberation of the performer. In the footsteps of these two academics, it is seen that the formation of performance theory, which begins with its similarity to cultural events, continues with current critical issues questioning the body ontology of the performer.
