Abstract
This article aims to examine the construction process of the Konya People’s House building, designed by Architect Şevki Balmumcu and currently used as the Konya State Theater, based on documents from the Republic Archive. The documents in the Republic Archive related to the construction process of the Konya People’s House have helped reveal an unknown structure by the architect. The building, designed by the architect in the mid-1940s, is an architectural example of the cultural mission undertaken by the People's Houses in bringing the ideology of the Republic to Anatolian cities. The study evaluates in detail the design process, material procurement, site selection, and administrative and technical problems encountered during the construction process. The documents show that Şevki Balmumcu played an active role not only in the Ankara Exhibition Hall but also in the design of a cultural structure in Anatolia. Furthermore, the use of local materials emphasized in the People's Houses Regulations is concretized as an economic and ideological principle through architecture, specifically in the Konya People's House. Stylistically distinct from Şevki Balmumcu's design for the Exhibition Hall, the Konya People’s House building bears traces of the Second National Architecture movement. In this context, the Konya People’s House is considered a unique example representing the architectural reflection of the cultural policies of the Early Republican Period.
