Abstract

This study examines the body of academic research on women’s film festivals worldwide between 1990 and 2025 using a bibliometric approach. The aim of the study is to reveal changes in the academic field by analyzing variables such as the historical development of women’s film festivals, annual scientific production, leading institutions, source dynamics, and the geographical distribution of publications. Data retrieved from the Web of Science and Scopus databases were analyzed using the Bibliometrix package in the RStudio environment. The findings indicate that the literature has followed a fluctuating development trajectory since the early 1990s, shaped by the contributions of a relatively small number of scholars. During the 1990s and early 2000s, institutional contributions were notably limited, and no specific universities or publishers succeeded in establishing a sustained line of academic production in the field. The results also reveal a geographically constrained yet gradually diversifying structure, with early research predominantly concentrated in a small number of Western countries, particularly in Europe and North America. Overall, this bibliometric analysis demonstrates that feminist film studies related to women’s film festivals constitute a historically grounded yet quantitatively limited body of literature. It is anticipated that future research directions will increasingly expand toward emerging themes such as digital media, online feminist activism, and transnational representations of women. In this context, it is recommended that future studies be supported by interdisciplinary approaches and international collaborations in order to enhance both the academic visibility and the societal impact of the field.

Özet

Bu çalışma, 1990-2025 yılları arasında dünya genelinde kadın film festivalleri üzerine yapılan akademik çalışmaları bibliyometrik yöntemle incelemektedir. Çalışmanın amacı kadın film festivallerinin tarihsel gelişimini, yıllık bilimsel üretimi, en ilgili kurumları, kaynakların potansiyelini, çalışmaların coğrafi dağılımı gibi değişkenleri inceleyerek akademik alandaki değişimi ortaya koymaktır. Çalışmada Web of Science ve Scopus veri tabanlarından elde edilen veriler Rstudio programındaki Bibliometrix yazılımı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir.
