Abstract
The vision-centered aesthetic tradition has excluded smell from art theory by treating it as a lower sense. This study addresses a question arising from that exclusion: How does painting, as a visual art form, evoke the experience of smell, which is neither directly visible nor easily verbalized, and reconstruct it in the viewer's memory? The aim of the study is to examine the relationship between olfactory aesthetics, odor memory, and intersensory representation in painting on the basis of the literature. The method consists of two stages. The first stage is a conceptual review of the literature on olfactory aesthetics, odor memory, and intersensory representation. The second is a qualitative analysis of works selected through purposive sampling. The analysis covers works and representational traditions selected from the image groups of flowers/still life, food/everyday life, and nature/atmosphere. A balance between Western and Turkish painting was maintained in the selection. The analyses suggest that visual cues related to objects, spaces, and atmospheres may evoke olfactory knowledge or imagery, while the specific content and emotional intensity of this evocation depend on the viewer's semantic knowledge, cultural background, and autobiographical memory. The original contribution of the study is a 3+1 reading model that organizes this analysis, distinguishing the three visual-cue layers offered by the painting (object, space, atmosphere) from the axis of viewer reception. In this respect, the model differs from the olfactory art literature, which treats scent as a physical material. Drawing on research into olfactory imagery and cross-modal visual-olfactory associations, this study seeks to explain how smell is evoked in paintings that contain no physical scent. It offers a conceptual contribution to an underexplored area in the Turkish literature.
