Abstract
The radical moral and social dissolution experienced in the Armistice-era Istanbul is portrayed in Peyami Safa’s novel Mahşer (1924) as a crisis manifested through the world of objects. While existing literature predominantly focuses on socio-political changes or psychological analyses, this study uses Peter Newmark’s translation taxonomy—through a methodological adaptation—as a descriptive grid to identify and classify material culture elements. The ways in which these objects symbolize social corruption are analyzed through the lens of Veblen’s ‘Conspicuous Consumption’ and Bourdieu’s ‘Habitus/Cultural Capital’ theories. This study aims to reveal how material culture components such as food, clothing, and housing represent the erosion of values and the nihilistic notion that “the earth belongs to the scoundrels”. Employing a qualitative research design, a “descriptive analysis” and “document review” were conducted based on the material culture categorization in Newmark’s A Textbook of Translation (1988). Research findings indicate that the class polarization between the “silver sets” and “fırancala” (white bread) of war profiteers and the “simit” as a symbol of destitution, along with the intellectual bankruptcy signified by untouched library shelves and the gambling-associated “red baize table,” support the “Mahşer” (Armageddon) metaphor at a symbolic level. Furthermore, the role of “cultural focus” terms such as “wagon trade” (vagon ticareti) in economic corruption is elucidated within the framework of an expressive text interwoven with the author’s “national rage”. This study provides an original contribution by integrating material culture research with literary analysis and translation theory, positioning objects as witnesses to social decay on an academic foundation.
Nitel araştırma yöntemiyle kurgulanan çalışmada, Newmark’ın A Textbook of Translation (1988) eserindeki maddi kültür sınıflandırması temel alınarak betimsel analiz ve doküman incelemesi yürütülmüştür. Araştırma bulguları; harp zenginlerinin “fırancala” ve “gümüş takımları” ile sefaletin simgesi “simit” arasındaki sınıfsal kutuplaşmanın, Mahir Bey’in kütüphanesindeki el sürülmemiş rafların ve kumarı imleyen “kırmızı çuhalı masa”nın temsil ettiği entelektüel iflasın, “Mahşer” metaforunu simgesel düzeyde desteklediğini göstermektedir. Ayrıca “vagon ticareti” gibi “kültürel odak” (cultural focus) terimlerinin ekonomik yozlaşmadaki rolü, yazarın “millî öfke”siyle harmanlanmış bir ifade edici metin düzleminde belirginleştirilmiştir. Bu çalışma, maddi kültür araştırmalarını geleneksel halk bilimi sınırlarının ötesine taşıyarak edebî metin analizi ve çeviribilim kuramıyla entegre etmesi bakımından özgün bir nitelik taşımakta; nesnelerin toplumsal çürümeye işaret eden tanıklar olduğunu akademik bir zeminde ortaya koymaktadır.
