Abstract
Abstract This study aims to examine the concepts of evidence and signification, which hold a central importance within the epistemology of the Islamic intellectual tradition, in the context of the methodological development of the science of Kalam. In Islamic epistemology, the production of knowledge is directly related to the process of making the unknown known, and this process is only possible through a coherent theory of signification. In the article, the transition process from the natural reasoning-based approaches of early period theologians to the logical syllogism form that emerged with the integration of Aristotelian logic into Kalam in the post-Ghazali period is analyzed based on Islamic terminology and its application to religious texts. In the literature, signification has been classified and handled in many different ways. In this study, the threefold classification, which is more functional in terms of the field, has been taken as a basis. The types of signification that form the focus of the study are handled under three main headings: rational, natural, and conventional. The ontological necessity from effect to cause, as in the example of smoke and fire in rational signification; the psychological manifestations in human nature in natural signification; and the social-cultural construction process of conventional signification are discussed in detail. Especially the relationship between word and meaning is evaluated at the intersection of the methodology of jurisprudence and Kalam, emphasizing the risks of decontextualizing the word on meaning. While the study aims to increase awareness regarding the problem of signification in Islamic sciences and to resolve methodological problems, it has adopted a perspective that prioritizes the problems of the science of Kalam. In this context, contributing to the solution of the principle of inikas-i edille, one of the methodological breaking points of the science of Kalam, through the theory of signification holds a central place in the article. It is demonstrated how the rigid attitude of the early period, suggesting that the nullity of the evidence would require the nullity of the proven, was relaxed in the later period with the assumption that "the absence of evidence cannot be evidence for non-existence," and the contributions this situation provided to the discussions on the possibility of knowledge. In terms of a future perspective, the rational solution proposals offered by the classical theory of signification for contemporary faith problems such as deism and atheism have been evaluated. Based on the premise that existence is a fixed reality in the external world, the relevance of a reading of existence, in which every part of the physical universe necessarily points to a metaphysical meaning, is maintained. Consequently, it is revealed that the theory of signification is not only a tool for theological proof but also an effort to understand the universe on a rational basis, offering a consistent methodology for the search for meaning in the modern period.
