Abstract
This study aims to clarify the complex relationship between religion, science, and reason (rationality). It analyzes the structural ruptures in traditional perceptions of religiosity brought about by modernity and the ontological position of the sacred in the contemporary world through a holistic perspective. The central thesis of the study argues that in the Islamic intellectual tradition, religion is not merely an object of faith but also possesses a ground of rational plausibility, as it directly addresses human reason. In this context, although science naturally shares the common ground of plausibility with religion, it is observed that modern perspectives seek to parcel out the epistemological field through the lens of scientism. The primary critical focus of this study is the invasive perspective of science that perceives the religious sphere as an object of threat. The article contends that claims regarding the exhaustion of religion's capacity to produce values and construct meaning are not empirical realities or objective data readings, but rather secular aspirations based on a positivist worldview. It is emphasized that the alleged epistemological and ontological conflict between religion and science actually stems from a methodological categorization error between disciplines. Indeed, the nature of the questions posed by these two fields and the layers of truth they address are fundamentally different. Therefore, just as science cannot be expected to offer epistemological devotion to religion, the necessity for religion to seek absolute consensus with scientific data is considered a problematic approach, both academically and ethically. However, due to the uniformizing understanding of knowledge in modernity, the fact that these two systems are complementary structures serving different purposes—rather than alternatives to one another—is often ignored. While religion offers teleological solutions to the existential crises and metaphysical voids of the individual, science represents a technical process aimed at understanding and transforming the universe for the benefit of humanity by identifying deterministic causes. While religion seeks the ultimate truth, including the existential justifications that make human beings valuable and provide meaning to their existence in the universe, science focuses on the functional mechanisms of factual reality. Adopting the perspective of conceptual analysis and the phenomenology of religion as its methodology, this study comparatively examines the knowledge of religion—which is fed by sacred sources and is deductive yet grounded in rational plausibility—alongside the nature-centered inductive approaches of science. Through epistemological boundary analysis and critical theory, the process of transforming scientific data into an ideological reductionism via "scientism" is scrutinized. Consequently, the article predicts that if both science and religion remain faithful to their own epistemic boundaries and renounce their claims of mutual hegemony, they can produce a complementary value for humanity from both ethical and intellectual perspectives.
