Abstract
The likelihood of a major earthquake occurring in Istanbul and its surroundings has been frequently emphasized by experts. Therefore, disaster education for individuals is a critical necessity to minimize the impacts of such events. Education holds strategic importance in preparing society for disasters, with teachers playing a fundamental role in this process. Designing sustainable educational programs aimed at reducing disaster risks is directly associated with enhancing teachers' knowledge and awareness levels. This study aims to determine the earthquake knowledge and awareness levels of teachers working in secondary schools. Using the survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, 258 teachers from seven different schools were selected through random sampling. Reliable and valid scales measuring earthquake knowledge and awareness levels were utilized during the data collection process. The analysis of the collected data revealed that teachers' earthquake knowledge levels were high, while their awareness levels were moderate. It was observed that teachers who had previously experienced an earthquake demonstrated higher awareness levels. The data obtained from the scales were analyzed using the IBM SPSS 25.0 software. The results indicated that teachers scored high on the earthquake knowledge scale but moderate on the earthquake awareness scale. Furthermore, the frequency of having experienced a significant earthquake was positively associated with higher awareness levels among teachers. Notably, 93.4% of the teachers reported being knowledgeable about the "life triangle" concept. However, only 42.6% stated that they had an emergency earthquake kit prepared at home. Additionally, 84.1% of the participants expressed that the country is generally unprepared for a potential earthquake. It is essential to strengthen the application of teachers' theoretical knowledge in practical settings. Earthquake education programs should be addressed through a more practical and interdisciplinary approach, ensuring that disaster awareness extends beyond the classroom into the broader community. In this regard, updating educational policies to align with these recommendations is strongly suggested.
